Inktober 2014 Is Almost Here!

It's hard to believe September is drawing to a close and Inktober is almost here!  What is Inktober you ask? In short, it's where you draw one ink drawing a day, every day, for the month of October. It's a pretty loose set of rules but if you want them, please check them out here.  The event was created by Mr. Jake Parker, in 2009, who's work I was introduced to only this year. I love his style and admire him as both an artist and an instructor! Do yourself a favor and check him out.

So this month I'll be trading in my Wacom for some Micron! Got my pens and I'm ready to go!

I haven't inked anything on paper since the very early 90's. This will be a challenge in every sense of the word but I'm excited. My goals are simple: build practice, make some comic imagery and have fun! How could that go wrong?  As long as I keep it simple Inktober should be fun. I made a new banner for the blog to celebrate the month. I'll be posting that, along with my first update on October 1st. Stay tuned...

In other news, I made some slight changes to the blog to make it more streamline. Now that I got as many "new" panels of The Last Resort done as my initial batch, I grouped them all into one gallery. It's your best viewing option if you're just here for the Last Resort comic strip. Please see the tab above.

Lastly, I've regained some focus as of late. I love comics and that's what I'm returning to. I still plan to practice illustration work but I'll keep posting of that to a minimum. It's been fun exploring that. I learned a lot of technique over the last year but still have a long way to go. I think my "style" will end up being cartoony. It's in my blood and I think I'm better off accepting that than to try and be something I'm not. We shall see...I don't feel like you can choose your style. Your style chooses you over time. Anyway, I'm going to continue to put in the time when I can and let it evolve organically. Anything I feel worth sharing will most likely be left to Twitter posts or go straight to the Sketch and Illustration page. See the tab above if that interests you.

Thanks for checking in. Grab some paper and ink and I'll see you all in Inktober!

The Last Resort: Swim Meat.

A quick pun I thought up while hearing somebody talk about competitive swimming.

Fan Art: Sitrah

I had the day off work today so I completed some fan art for Jason Brubaker, creator of the amazing graphic novels reMIND and now Sithrah. You can read his online graphic novels for fee at sithrah.com or remindblog.com.  Both are fantastic works of art. If you like what you see and want to support him you can buy reMIND on Amazon. He's currently wrapping up a KickStarter campaign to get Sithrah published that ends TODAY!!  I'm very pleased to announce the book has been funded and will be printed! If you'd like to grab a copy or just support his efforts you can go to his KickStarter campaign here.

Hope you enjoy his book and this illustration. (Click on the image for a larger view).

The Last Resort: Sign of the Vikings

For those of you bored with my illustrations work as of late, I offer up a new panel of The Last Resort. I've had this one rolling around my head in for a few years now but just got around to putting it into pixels.

I'm always bewildered by the signs and bumper stickers people feel they have to put on their cars: as if these declarations will some how change the lives of others. "You know... I was going to skip through town, beating people with a wiffle ball bat today, but the ass-end of that car is telling me to coexist. Guess I better sheath my anger as well as my plastic sword."

It is in this state of perplexity that I ponder the sign featured in the cartoon above. It can only serve one of two purposes: Either the occupants of the car feel the need to brag about their ability to reproduce (big whoop) or 2. They think it's a magic shield that will protect their infant from harm. To them both I say, "RAMMING SPEED!"

Illustration Friday: Radio

The IllustrationFriday.com subject for this week is "Radio". I found it surprisingly challenging...in the end I decided to pay tribute to the great animators of the early 30's and let my mind wander down that road. Maybe this piece is a more a statement about those films than "Radio" but I'm happy with it. It was fun trying to merge my style with the art of the time period. Any excuse to watch cartoons!

Illustration Friday: Metamorphosis

This week's subject for Illustration Friday is "Metamorphosis."  I think I'm still getting too painterly with these illustrations but I returned to my cartoon roots a bit on this one and I think paid off. I like it the best of the three I've done and had fun making it: probably because I liked Franz Kafka's "The Metamorphosis" so much. If you are going to illustrate Metamorphosis, might as well illustrate THE Metamorphosis!

If you haven't read it do yourself a favor and check it out. Enjoy! And happy Friday!
