The Last Resort: Frank's For The Mammeries

I've always had a soft spot for Frankenstein ever since Phil Hartman's version of him on SNL. He'll always be the voice of Frankenstein in my head.

MC Lars: Rapper, Cartoonist, Genius and Nice Guy

I got the chance to take my wife on a rare date last night. We went to see MC Chris, MC Lars and Spose at The Metro Gallery in Baltimore. What a great show!! I would have paid the ticket price to see any one of these guys solo, so I used this bargain to treat myself to a bunch of merch.

Biggest surprise of the night was finding this little gem right here!

Not only can MC Lars rap but he can make some pretty funny comics.  I've plowed through half the book this morning over coffee had some really good laughs. The style is pretty raw and looks like he drew it using a mouse and Microsoft Paint, but sometimes that actually helps carry the joke. It's a collection of his college strip 27th Street from his time at Stanford, so don't expect pro-level comics but do expect some fun surprises. I've enjoyed the book so much that I couldn't wait to finish reading it to post about it.

Starting with the intro, this book had me hooked. Lars' experience as a college cartoonist was so similar to my own that I could have written the intro myself. His style is smart, bizarre, absurd and at times just leaves you saying WTF? My kind of comic strip! I think anyone who enjoys MC Lars or comics should check out this strip... in the very least, check out the man behind it. Lars is crazy smart and his raps are some of the best around. Above all, he seems like a genuinely nice guy. I'm so glad we got to meet him and see him perform live. The night was so much fun.

Getting back to business....I should have some panels of The Last Resort this week. Stay tuned! And if you're new to the site, please check out the archives tab of The Last Resort!  Thanks for visiting.

Ramona Flowers

For those of you who don't follow me on twitter, I drew Ramona Flowers for Sketch Dailies today. I'm pretty happy with how she turned out...Below her is "Roller Girl" (Also for Sketch Dalies). I thought it would be fun to put a Baltimore spin on that topic. Had a good time making both. Enjoy!

The Last Resort: Hashtag

After the long InkTober and a brief break I'm back to my usual brand of comics. Was thinking about breakfast and social media this morning when I drew this one up.

InkTober Day 31: Rest in Peace Inktober

I had to finish inking this one today because I took my girls trick-or-treating and was too wiped to stay up and finish.

I'm 31 and done! Participated in and completed my first ever InkTober challenge.  Feels good!  Thank you to all of you who tuned in and supported me through this.

I hit all my goals: practiced drawing and inking, made some comics and had fun!  Even better I finished all 31 days and I got a lot more out of this than I thought I would.

-- It forced me to produce under pressure. Although some of the subject matter was old, I got 31 new drawings out of it.

-- I came up with a surprising amount of brand new comics that I ended up liking and will probably turn into strips for The Last Resort. I think 18 of the 31 have potential.  That's 18 new comics I didn't have before this began!

--It forced me to work faster. By working every day I could tell I was drawing quicker than I normally would

--It also was a bigger challenge than I thought it would be. So hard coming up with a new idea every day in between working a full time job and raising a family.

I'm drained. So while it was fun it was also taxing. Felt like I just finished working out and I could use a rest....but not too long. I'm eager to get back to my usual comics.

See you soon!
